2008 Combine Drills

Each station has a Captain. The Captain's decisions regarding results are final and will not be disputed. Athletes who do not abide by this policy will be asked to leave. The decisions of all Combine staff are final.

40-Yard Dash (Surface: AstroPlay)

Each player will have the opportunity to run two (2) 40-yard sprints with hand held timers. There are two watches at each checkpoint and the best time is recorded at each checkpoint. The players will REMAIN IN THEIR SEQUENCE ORDER throughout the test with their names announced prior to each run. Athletes will get two attempts.

Rules:
  • All athletes will start each sprint from a 3-POINT stance or if preferred, a track stance--having no part of the body past the starting line.
  • Each player must remain set for 2 seconds or they will be whistled back for a restart.
  • The "Start Captain" will monitor each start to control any tendencies for a "roll-out" or a "quick" start.
  • If the athlete is whistled back, no penalty will be reported, the athlete will get a short rest and then proceed to retest.
  • The time will be recorded in the hundredth second.
Short Shuttle (or Pro Agility):

20-Yard Shuttle (Surface: AstroPlay)

The athlete will straddle the 5-yard line in a 3-Point stance. The player will run left to the 10 yard line, then run right to the GL and then left - back through the 5 yard line. The time will begin on first movement and end when the athlete has crossed the finish line. Two timers will be used, with the average of the two times being recorded.

Rules:
  • Each player will get two (2) timed attempts.
  • The athlete must touch the yard line with his hand. FAILING TO TOUCH THE LINE RESULTS IN A "NO-TIME."
  • If the player falls or slips, or if the athlete fails to touch the line, he will be able to repeat the test without penalty, maximum of 3 tries. It is the athlete's responsibility to not slip.
  • Time will begin on first movement and end when the player crosses the finish line
  • The time will be recorded to the nearest hundredth second.
Vertical Jump (Surface: Flat Concrete)

The vertical jump will be measured using a Vertec TM system for measuring vertical jumps. The procedure for measuring the vertical jump is to use the difference for the jump measurement and the standing reach measurement. Each player will get two (2) attempts and the best jump will be recorded.

Rules:
  • The athlete is not allowed to "stagger" his feet; the feet must be at shoulder width apart.
  • The athlete is not allowed to "rock" before he attempts to jump. The athlete will squat and then immediately jump.
  • The results will be recorded in inches.
3 Cone Drill (Surface: AstroPlay)

The cones are placed 5 yards apart and placed in an inverted "L" position. The athlete will start in a three/two point stance. He will sprint from Cone A to Cone B and then back to Cone A. Then he will sprint around the outside of Cone B towards the inside of Cone C. The athlete will go around Cone C and back to the outside of Cone B on the way to the finish line at Cone A. Two timers will be used, with the average of the two times being recorded.

Rules:
  • Each player will get two (2) timed attempts.
  • If the player slips or falls, fails to run the sequence in the proper order or if the athlete fails to touch the line, they will get to restart without penalty, a maximum of 3 tries. It is the athlete's responsibility to not slip.
  • The player must touch the line between Cone A and B. FAILING TO TOUCH RESULTS IN A "NO-TIME."
  • Time will begin on first movement and end when the player crosses the finish line.
  • The time will be recorded to the nearest hundredth second.
Anthropometrical Measurements

Height

Height will be recorded in feet and inches to the nearest 1/4 of an inch. Weight

Weight will be measured in pounds to the nearest pound.

Bench Press

Athletes will be measured in maximum reps at either 185 or 225 pounds. Athletes will get one attempt, after a proper warm-up.

Rules:
  • Buttocks cannot be raised off the bench. If this happens the rep will not count.
  • The elbows must be completely locked in order for each rep to count.
  • The bar cannot remain on the lifter's chest for more than ten (10) seconds
  • No excessive bouncing of the bar off the chest is allowed.
  • Each lifter is encourage to work at a steady pace with no stopping between reps.
